They also supported the training of ten female farmers to form a dedicated women’s coffee cooperative. This cooperative represents \u003cstrong\u003ea turning point\u003c\/strong\u003e, ensuring that the \u003cstrong\u003evital contributions of women\u003c\/strong\u003e are \u003cstrong\u003eformally recognized and celebrated\u003c\/strong\u003e. The cooperative serves as a platform for collaboration, exchange of knowledge and stands as a symbol of the collective resolve of Mahwit’s women.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Mahwit region is quite cut off and it's hard to find Mahwiti coffee. Silver linings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRandolfo was one of the first farmers Semilla bought from in Guatemal in 2018, and he is an active member of the Xinka coffee producer group. This group is actively involved in \u003cstrong\u003eresistance against the illegal exploitation of a silver mine\u003c\/strong\u003e by Vancouver-based Pan-American Silver. This Canadian company wants to go ahead and exploit the mine despite the \u003cstrong\u003eXinka people unanimously opposing this extractive project on their ancestral land\u003c\/strong\u003e and formed a group called \u003cstrong\u003eCafe Colis Resistencia\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWe are proud to join Semilla in their efforts to stand on the side of Indigenous sovereignty and landing our support for this producing group. \u003cstrong\u003e Not only does Semilla buy the coffees well above market prices, but they focus on partnering with peripheral farmers who simply could not access the specialty market. \u003c\/strong\u003e This would force famers to sell their delicious coffee at a discount either to large, exploitative corporations, or internally in Guatemala, in both cases for pennies on the dollar.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDespite many hardships over the years, like loosing half of his trees to diseases in 2020, he persevered, replanted, and can now harvest and process his coffee himself.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eHere are a few words from Randolfo:\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e“Thank you for supporting our project, Cafe Colis Resistencia.
